Managing Metallic Artifacts in MRI
نویسنده
چکیده
Background Magnetism is a fundamental property of matter. As such, all substances have some type of magnetic property. Magnetic susceptibility refers to an object’s or substance’s ability to become magnetized. If two substances with different magnetic susceptibilities are close to one another, a small local magnetic field gradient is induced. The greater the difference in magnetic susceptibility between the two, the greater the induced gradient magnetic field will be. This induced gradient magnetic field can result in an image artifact seen as signal loss and even geometric distortion of the anatomy.

Assessment of MRI Issues at 3 Tesla for a New Metallic Tissue Marker
Purpose. To assess the MRI issues at 3 Tesla for a metallic tissue marker used to localize removal areas of tissue abnormalities. Materials and Methods. A newly designed, metallic tissue marker (Achieve Marker, CareFusion, Vernon Hills, IL) used to mark biopsy sites, particularly in breasts, was assessed for MRI issues which included standardized tests to determine magnetic field interactions (...
متن کاملAssessment of MRI issues at 3-Tesla for metallic surgical implants: findings applied to 61 additional skin closure staples and vessel ligation clips
PURPOSE Metallic skin closure staples and vessel ligation clips should be tested at 3-Tesla to characterize MRI issues in order to ensure patient safety. Therefore, metallic surgical implants were assessed at 3-Tesla for magnetic field interactions, MRI-related heating, and artifacts. METHODS A skin closure staple (Visistat Skin Stapler, staple, Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, coated 316L/316L...
متن کاملArtifacts in brain magnetic resonance imaging due to metallic dental objects.
OBJECTIVE Artifacts caused by metallic objects, such as dental crowns, dental implants and metallic orthodontic appliances, are a common problem in head and neck MRI. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the main metal dental objects that produce artifacts on brain MRIs. STUDY DESIGN Imaged metallic artifacts and their sources were identified. Artifact image plane was rated on ...
متن کاملInfluence of orthodontic appliance-derived artifacts on 3-T MRI movies
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to study configurations of speech organs in the resting state. However, MRI is sensitive to metals, and numerous types of metallic appliances, most of which have a large magnetic susceptibility, are used in orthodontic treatment and may cause severe artifacts on MRI. We have developed techniques for obtaining MRI movies of the oral regio...
متن کاملScore Evaluation of MRI Sequence Type Related Artifacts after Interbody Fusion with Metallic Implants—A Spine Specimen Study
Introduction: According to anterior spine fusion intervertebral disc spacers made of titanium or cobalt-chromium alloys are of special interest. With regard to postoperative problems implant related artifacts can lead to a decreased MRI evaluation. The focus of this study was to compare the respective implant artifact range dependend on different MRI sequences. To simplify artifact evaluation w...
متن کاملArtifacts of Titanium, Zirconium, and Binary Titanium-Zirconium Abutments in Compute Tomography, Cone Beam Computed Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate imaging artifacts induced by Titanium, Zirconium, Titanium-Zirconium abutments in CT, MRI and CBCT imaging modalities. Methods: A 4×8mm titanium fixture was inserted in a dry human mandible. Titanium, Zirconium and Titanium–Zirconium abutments measuring 10.5 mm in height are located on the fixture, one by one. Each abutment was scan...
